Estate plans are a lot like helmets. They can protect the young.

Posted on: September 13th, 2011
Children are our most valuable asset worth protecting. Just ask any parent. It’s don’t-mess-with-mama-bear primal. While some forms of protection are second nature, such as keeping a child away from oncoming traffic and sharp objects, other forms require a lot more forethought beyond remembering to sign up for next month’s swim lessons.

No one wants to be an irresponsible parent. The sheer number of products in the child safety aisle at Babies "R" Us is proof of that. But being a responsible parent of minors is every bit as much about making guardianship and inheritance plans for  “what ifs” as it is about installing their car seat to exact manufacturer guidelines or making them wear a helmet at bat.

In a world where lots of people buy precautionary items like diaper wipe warmers, it amazes me that most parents leave their children completely unprotected from one of life’s most crushing blows: being orphaned.

Yes, it’s a tough thing to think about. So is your house burning down, yet no one questions the need for fire insurance. That’s why I encourage clients to go down that tough road and create an Estate Plan that protects their minor children. It’s the only way to ensure the best in the event of the worst.

And while your children’s future will contain happiness, it may also bring about lawsuits, divorces and unscrupulous people. The benefit of an Estate Plan is that it can safeguard against these situations in the immediate future — and bring about security that lasts for generations.

Clearly protection is a powerful force. Kind of like love.
